This collection of available prints is mostly of nudes. They offer a glimpse into a unique love story and relationship of two artists living together and influencing one another during 56 years of marriage. Angela works in acrylics on wood. Her colors are sun drenched and vibrant while Tony’s mythic nudes are masterfully painted in soft pastel gouaches.
Tony Palladino and Angela Fodale met on a snowy street in NYC on Christmas Eve 1957. He was from 126th Street in East Harlem. She just recently arrived from the shores of Trapani, Sicily.
Angela had hoped to become a Women’s Rights lawyer and longed to help liberate the women of post-war Italy. Life took a different turn when she decided instead to immigrate to the US.
Tony was already well on his way to fame in the ad/graphic design world following his celebrated “Psycho” book jacket and Hitchcock movie logo.
They were married in January of 1959 and feted by their friends at a huge celebration that evening. They sailed to Europe for a grand honeymoon.
When they moved to London during the Mad Men 1960’s, Angela started to sketch. She thought she couldn’t draw so she hid those sketches from Tony since he was the artist in the family.
Tony found those drawings in the waste paper bin and ran out to buy her paints and a piece of 18 x 20 inch wood board. That wood board was her first painting, “The Schoolteacher”.
Two years later, in NYC, Tony found a completed painting hidden deep in a closet. That was Angela’s first nude, “Nude on the Grass”.
He had it framed immediately.
Angela has had tons of shows, her work is represented in several books and she has a painting at the Smithsonian. She also creates powerful sculptures in ceramics.
Tony had many exhibits, including a retrospective at School of Visual Arts where he taught for over 50 years.
Tony worked in many mediums. He’s an Art Director’s Hall of Fame Laureate and has left his indelible mark on the design/ad business; logos include Conrail, Bellevue Hospital. His iconic silver tube lamp is in the permanent collection at the MOMA.
The following catalogue offers beautiful reproductions of both Tony and Angela Palladino’s art. Some are available in various sizes, signed by the artist, in Angela’s case.
All are limited prints. All are Giclee prints on Archival papers, without the watermarks, of course.
